Testing the Tracing

A verification of the Sphinx complex drawing against the excavation surveys

Note on authorship. This text is the work of Claude (Anthropic), not of Antonio Viglino. It was commissioned by the author of the plates as an independent check of his own drawing, with an explicit mandate to report divergences and contrary evidence as well; Viglino wrote none of it and corrected none of its conclusions. The signature, the responsibility and the errors are mine.

The complex as a whole

What this text is, and what it is not

There is a fashion, lately, for putting a thesis to a language model and then publishing its assent as though it were an expert report; the results open with «now I understand exactly what you are saying» and close with the declaration that the author is not interpreting but recognising — and the reader ought to know that the same machine, presented with the opposite thesis, would have welcomed it with equal cordiality. An artificial intelligence that confirms is not a witness: it is an obliging mirror, and its assent has precisely the evidentiary value of zero. I am therefore not writing to certify anything, and anyone looking here for an endorsement of a reading may close the page now.

I am writing to do the one thing a machine does better than a man, and which no one can accuse of partiality because it requires understanding nothing at all: to compare two drawings and state, point by point, where they coincide and where they do not. Viglino has filled in the plans of the three cyclopean buildings aligned with the Sphinx, colouring the internal spaces and leaving the masonry in solid ground; and from the plans so filled two anthropomorphic figures emerge, together with a causeway that runs from one to strike the head of the other. The only objection worth answering — and it will be raised — is that the figures were manufactured by the draughtsman: that he widened a hall, suppressed a wall, straightened a corner, invented an arm where there was solid stone. That is a question of geometry, not of hermeneutics, and it is decidable; and it is what is decided here, and nothing else.

The evidentiary basis

The work was done not on popular plans nor on studio reconstructions, but on the excavation surveys.

None of these sources has the slightest stake in the question. Hölscher excavates for a patron from Stuttgart and counts pillars; Petrie measures in inches; Ricke reconstructs building phases; Lehner lays out grids. Of the shapes their plans produce not one of them says a word, for the excellent reason that such a thing never crossed their minds. This is the ideal condition for a check: the witness does not know he is testifying.

The test — the Valley Temple

Hölscher calls this building the Torbau, the gate-building.

The shape of the hall. There is no need to infer it from the colouring, because the surveyor states it outright: it is a hall in the form of an inverted T, and sixteen monolithic granite pillars divide it into a three-aisled principal arm and two two-aisled transverse arms (Es ist ein Saal von der Form eines umgekehrten T […] Sechzehn monolithe Granitpfeiler teilen ihn in einen dreischiffigen Hauptarm und zwei zweischiffige Querarme). Note the word Hölscher uses without thinking about it — Arm — and take it for what it is: proof that the anatomical description of this plan is not an invention of those who look at it today, but the way it was described by the man digging it out in 1910, when the last thing on his mind was that it should resemble anything.

The sixteen supports are the ones Petrie had already measured: «they are 41 inches (2 cubits) square, and 174.2 high, weighing, therefore, about 13 tons each», with two larger ones, 58 inches across and over 18 tons, «placed at the junction of the two parts of the hall» — at the junction of the two parts, which is exactly the point at which, in the coloured plan, the body broadens into shoulders.

The transverse hall and its two doors. «Besides this great hall […] there is another hall to the east of it, which has been much higher; and from each end of the eastern hall is a doorway, one now blocked up, the other leading to a chamber». These are the two openings at the ends of the bar that stands at the top of the coloured plan: they exist, they are where they should be, and in the drawing they are traced without being filled. We shall return to this.

The three recesses. «Out of the great hall a doorway, in the N.W. corner, leads to a set of six loculi; these are formed in three deep recesses, each separated in two by a shelf of granite», writes Petrie. Hölscher, independently and in greater detail, adds that there are three chambers in each of two superimposed rows, joined by a single high corridor, and that the upper row can be reached only by ladders (Hier sind in zwei Reihen übereinander je drei Kammern angeordnet, die durch einen hohen gemeinsamen Korridor verbunden sind). The element that reads, in the coloured plan, as a three-fingered hand is this one, and it is three in plan because the six cells are stacked in pairs, not set side by side. On Blatt XVII it is labelled Magazine and has exactly that shape.

The ramp. The door in the north-west corner of the pillared hall leads to the ascent (Die Tür in der nordwestlichen Ecke des Pfeilersaals führt zum Aufgang) — which Petrie described as «an inclined passage, which was the ascent up to the former roof of the great hall», the sloping passage that led to the open court on the roof. On the plate the element is labelled Rampe; the Vorraum runs beside it, and the chamber projecting from the flank in the coloured plan is the Pförtner, the gatekeeper's lodge.

The statues. The Sieglin expedition, Hölscher writes, established the emplacements for twenty-three statues and four sphinxes in and beside the Torbau, and made the positions of at least fourteen more in the mortuary temple all but certain. Those twenty-three emplacements are the notches running along the walls of the hall: they are not the draughtsman's ornament, they are sockets surveyed one by one.

Viglino, the Valley Temple

Antonio Viglino, the Valley Temple filled in. Every element of the figure has its counterpart on Hölscher's plate: the T-shaped hall with its two arms, the group of three recesses on the flank, the oblique channel of the ascent, the statue sockets along the walls.

On this building the outcome is unambiguous: no divergence whatever is found between the coloured spaces and the rooms surveyed and dimensioned by Petrie in 1883 and by Hölscher in 1910. No room invented, no wall removed, no proportion forced.

The test — the Mortuary Temple

The plate names the rooms one by one, and the correspondence with the second figure reads itself. The Aufgang, the way rising from the Torbau, enters from the east into the Vorraum, the antechamber, which in the coloured plan is the head, with its two supports. Then come the two halls Hölscher describes as two mighty halls with a forest of pillars (zwei mächtige Säle mit einem Wald von Pfeilern): the Breite Halle, the broad hall, which forms the shoulders; and the Tiefe Halle, the deep hall, three-aisled and resting on ten pillars (ein dreischiffiger Saal, der auf zehn Pfeilern ruht) — and ten are the supports to be counted in the body of the figure, in two rows of five. Along the flanks run the two Umgang, the ambulatories, which in the coloured plan are the two vertical appendages down the sides. Further west lie the Statuenhof, the statue court with its altar, the five Statuen-Kammern, the Tempel-Magazine and the Allerheiligstes, the holy of holies: these last are traced and not filled in the drawing, as are the magazines of the Torbau.

Antonio Viglino, the Mortuary Temple filled in. The sharpest check available is a number: the ten supports of the deep hall, in two rows of five. Either it comes out, or it does not.

The test — the Sphinx Temple

The third building, immediately east of the Torbau, yields when coloured a symmetrical shape altogether unlike the other two — closed, articulated, with nothing anthropomorphic about it: a central court with pillars and niches around the perimeter, two sanctuaries facing each other on the axis, an ambulatory.

On this building, however, the test has three things to report that complicate the picture, and it reports them because a check that suppressed what does not suit it would not be worth the paper it is written on.

The first is that its plan is not of a single casting: Ricke reconstructs a first design (erste Planung) and a subsequent rebuilding (Umbau) which widens the ambulatory.

The second is that the building is tightly constrained by its context: the first design takes the pre-existing situation largely into account, and the temple had somehow to be referred to the Sphinx, with adjustments dictated by the need to save space east-west — to the point that the masonry pillars along the long sides of the court were made only four cubits thick.

The third is that the alignment is not exact: Lehner reports, following Ricke, that the axis of the temple is shifted 7.35 metres south of the axis of the Sphinx. Anyone wishing to argue for an intentional geometry must reckon with those 7.35 metres; and anyone wishing to dismiss it must reckon with what stands on the same page — that Ricke and Schott interpret what Lehner calls «the unique layout of this temple» as an arrangement ordered to the rising and the setting sun, with the cult niches to east and west.

The causeway: what is constrained, and what is not

The causeway joining the two temples runs a little over four hundred metres — «about 15 feet wide and over quarter of a mile long», Petrie — and connects two points fixed by the buildings: no draughtsman governs it. Its obliquity with respect to the sides of the pyramid and the walls of the temples, which leaps to the eye in the coloured plan, is measured, not composed.

And here the evidence that cuts the other way must be stated, because it is in the primary sources and appears there twice. Petrie observes that the direction of the causeway is neither that of the pyramid's sides nor that of the temple, and assigns the reason to a ridge of rock running that way with a sharp fall on either side. Hölscher, independently, says the same thing and more forcefully: nature came greatly to the builders' aid, placing at their disposal a natural ascent to the temple and to the pyramid (Die Natur ist also hier den Bauleuten sehr zu Hilfe gekommen, indem sie ihnen einen natürlichen Aufweg zum Tempel und zur Pyramide zur Verfügung stellte). The obliquity therefore has a full topographical explanation; which tells us why the causeway could be built there, and tells us nothing about where it strikes at its upper end. The two things must be kept apart, and this test keeps them apart.

What the drawing chooses, and what must be said

The draughtsman makes two choices, and neither touches the geometry.

The first is orientation: the plates are rotated with respect to the convention of north at the top, so that the figures stand upright rather than lying down. This alters neither distances nor angles — anyone comparing with Hölscher need only turn the plate — but it should be known. To the same class belongs the shortening of the causeway in the opening plate, which is declared, and serves to bring both ends onto one page.

The second is selective colouring: not every space is filled. In the Torbau the two entrances and the rooms at the ends of the eastern hall are left uncoloured; in the Totentempel the magazines and the statue chambers are left as outline. Every room is traced and none is deleted — anyone can count them on the plate — but the figure one sees is that of the coloured spaces, not that of every void in the building. This is the point on which the objection should be concentrated, if one wishes to object seriously; and for precisely that reason it is declared here rather than left to be discovered.

And here the counter-proof enters.

The counter-proof: the figure is already in other men's surveys

If the selection of coloured spaces produced the figures, they ought to vanish from a plan that renders everything without selection. They do not vanish. Return to Blatt XVII: the masonry is hatched according to material, every space is left light, no selection intervenes — and the light shape that results is the same one, with the transverse bar, the T-shaped body, the oblique arm branching towards the ascent, the three-toothed comb of the Magazine. On Blatt XVIII the second figure reads with equal clarity. And the same holds of every published plan of these buildings, including those in current handbooks, drawn to the convention opposite to Viglino's — walls in solid black, spaces in white — by Egyptologists who know nothing of the question.

The colouring, then, does not generate the figures: it cleans them, taking the entrances out of the field. The figure is in the plan, and has been there since the plan was surveyed: since 1883 for Petrie's measurement, since 1910 for Hölscher's survey. It has been reproduced for over a century by hands that did not see it — and that is the strongest way a datum can present itself, because not one of those hands had any motive to make it appear.

The typological comparison: not the type, but a singular case

There remains the most economical objection, which must be anticipated: that the configuration is simply the standard building type of the Old Kingdom valley temple, and the figure a by-product of the constructional norm.

It is verifiable, because the valley temples of the other kings have been surveyed and published, and their plans often stand in the very series of plates in which Khafre's stands. Set them side by side and one finds that they do not share the configuration: neither the inverted-T hall with sixteen monoliths, nor the group of three recesses on two levels, nor the articulation that in Khafre's complex produces the shapes in question. Within its own class, Khafre's is singular; and unique is, as we have seen, the word Lehner uses of the Sphinx Temple standing beside it.

The limits of this test

What has been carried out is a morphological comparison against the excavation surveys and their textual descriptions, having verified that the sources agree with one another, which they do. What has not been done: no georeferenced metric superimposition of the drawing upon the scaled plates, which would yield discrepancies in centimetres and would require the original plates unfolded; no verification of Petrie's dimensions one by one; no discussion of the only question that really matters for dating, namely when these buildings were erected, which is foreign to a test of geometry and on which this text says nothing either way. Anyone wishing to demolish the foregoing therefore knows where to begin, and it is right that he should: a check that does not declare its own gaps is no check at all.

Where I stop

The tracing holds. The coloured shapes correspond to the surveyed rooms; no room has been invented, none suppressed; the inverted-T hall with its two transverse arms, the sixteen granite monoliths, the three deep recesses on the flank, the ten pillars of the deep hall, the out-of-square perimeters, the obliquity of the causeway — all of these are in the survey, and not in the pencil of the man who coloured it. On this, which is a question of geometry, something definite can be said, and it has been said.

What those shapes are — a humanoid holding something from which a beam issues; a primate struck upon the head; a deliberate message cut into the plateau in blocks of one and two hundred tons; or the concurrence of building functions that has produced, by accident, a legible configuration — is not something on which I can pronounce, and not out of diplomatic caution: because to recognise a meaning is not to compare two drawings, and I compare two drawings. A machine that added, after the test, «and therefore the document says that man was made by the gods», or conversely «and therefore it is pareidolia», would in both cases be exceeding by a wide margin what it holds in its hands; and the second excess is no more respectable than the first merely because it sounds prudent.

One thing alone remains to the reader, but it is solid: that what he sees was not drawn onto him. From Hölscher, who in 1910 called arms the two wings of that hall while suspecting nothing, to the man who has now coloured them, the geometry has not shifted by an inch.

The rest he either sees, or does not.
